Papillion Days and More...

This past weekend was Papillion Days.  I felt like we needed this in our Summer-of-Fun list!
Ben was able to schedule a play date with his school friend, we spent time with our Stevens family, and had a soggy evening at the Butler house.

We spent Friday at the zoo - the BEST zoo EVER!  During the winter they updated Scotts Aquarium and it gives an entirely different feel to the place.  That evening we all went to the Testicle Festival, and then to the FIREWORK show.

The boys were devastated when we told them they weren't riding rides Friday night, but after a little Funnel cake all was right with the universe.
Saturday after the rain let up, we headed back to the carnival and the boys rode rides till they couldn't stand the excitement anymore (they were exhausted).  We ate one more time in Papillion, said goodbye to our good friends the Kendalls, and started our journey back to the house.

On Sunday, we stopped in Oklahoma City at Bricktown.  It's a nice area - where the city has created a river walk area. I had heard about it several times, but this was our first stop and it was well worth it.

Here are more pictures from our trip.  I left the camera a LOT, b/c of the rain or potential rain - so really there's only pics of the carnival.

Movie-athon and road trip

Yesterday the boys watched movies and played video games as we drove down to see my grandma for the day.
We stopped and bought kolaches to share with her at the Czech Stop.
While there Ben showed his campfire building skills. I was pretty impressed, this young one has been paying attention.
Once we got home we played in the pull and the boys had a new toy arrive.

Science and History Museum

A rainy day here in Texas.
Ben laid on a bed of nails, they walked in a giant nose, crossed a construction beam in a mock high-rise. We played with an enormous Operation table, made farting and burping noises, and even made barf. It was awesome. Then we took a 4D excursion through space and land where dinosaur "spit" landed on us.

Took the boys to eat Sushi today. Ben tried a California roll, but it wasn't his fav. He managed the chopsticks well for a beginner!

Fort Worth Nature Center

Today the boys had a choice of the museum and Grossology or the Nature Center.
They chose hiking, exploring, (sweating), and picnicking.   It was an excellent choice!
We saw buffalo, deer, herons, egrets, birds we have yet to identify, snakes (in aquariums), and (injured) owls.  It was a pretty neat excursion.  We didn't do much back trail hiking.  We mainly stayed on the short trails and boardwalks.  It's one thing to hike 3 miles and have a geyser at the end of the hike as your reward, it's a different story to hike 3 miles and see thicket.

At the boardwalk we had at least 5 turtles swim up and stare us down.  I'm sure they were waiting for turtle treats but we hadn't brought any, and the signs say not to feed them anyway.

On the way home the boys twisted my arm and had me stop at OrangeLeaf for some froyo.  By the time we made it to the house Cloudy was dozing pretty hard.  Ben grabbed his book before I could even take my shoes off, and he curled up to read more.

This is our attempt at seeing the Venus Transit.  Unfortunately,  we had some cloud cover and never saw it from "our sun".  So we relied on "NASA's sun" video feed.  pretty neat stuff.

Cloudy is grumping because he doesn't want to share the swing with anyone.

On the first day of summer - we played in the bounce house, created a
"summer to do" list, and made bubbles from scratch.

Bubble recipe:
12 cups water
1 cup dish soap
1 cup corn starch
2 Tbls baking powder

place ingredients in a bucket. Stir gently. Let sit for an hour.

Schools out for summer!

A while back we attended our nephew Matt's graduation. It's hard to
believe that he is 18 and graduated high school, just a few short
years ago he was Ben's size and visiting us in Nebraska.

Ben's last day was Jun 1. The school had designated the last day of
school to be donuts for breakfast day, and there was a list sent home
for kids to bring items in. On Friday when Cloudy and I arrived with
our Dozen donuts, I counted 18 dozen donuts JUST for the first graders
(3 classes of less than 20 kids!) That doesn't even take in to
account the heaps and mounds of other food they had.

This weekend we lounged around the house. On Saturday we searched and
searched the city for a recycling center that accepted paper,
plastics, glass... RECYCLES! We found lots of places that had
aluminum or metal - but none that would take our household recycles.
We live on the wrong side of the street to be included in Waste
Managements recycling program. (ONE STREET!)
But while we were down in Ft Worth, we stopped and visited the Water
Gardens downtown. They were interesting and I'm sure pretty amazing
at night.
