Simon says

Tonight we were catching up on American Idol and Ben asked "Isn't Simon supposed to be in that seat? Where's Simon?". I wasn't aware Ben was such a Simon fan.

Cloudy found Bens cowboy hat. I bought the hat for Ben about this age. So I did a hack job of reshaping it and Cloudy LOVES it.

The big battle at our house right now is convincing Cloudy to talk.
Sometimes I hear what I want, and praise him for repeating (in a mumble murmur) what I say. Today - I was saying to him over and over "potty": Do you need to go, You're on the, lets go use the.... potty potty potty...
While he was sitting on the potty - I asked him (stupid me) "Cloudy can you say potty?" Hoping he would attempt, even in the slightest way, to annunciate the word. Instead, I get a very prominent Head Nod and a look that says of course I can say it.

Parenting Win x2!

Parenting Win #1: Day 2 of potty familiarization and SUCCESS (x4!).
Yesterday was disastrous, a stiff drink was needed at the end of the day. Today was much better! Cloudy was successful on the throne, and instead of changing 8 pair of undies we only had to change 3 times - ALL DAY. That is very successful! He's pretty darn smart - I'm sure the gummies he receives as a reward are pretty helpful too.

Cloudy is 17mo - and yes it's a little early - But I want him to have a good understanding of what's going on before I thrust his little butt in daycare part-time next month.

Parenting Win #2: Ben was one out of four children in his class (of 17) that knew ALL of his sight words! He came home beaming with pride.

The new dilemma

When you're older and you 'mouth' words, usually means you are saying something you shouldn't. But when you're 17mo and mouthing words you get praised?!
Well it's a start we suppose. In the past few weeks we have finally squeezed out a few repetitive words from Cloudy: mommy, dadda, ben, ball. Besides "Ben" and "ball" he doesn't use the words to actually refer to - well - us.
But words nonetheless and we are excited. We noticed our newest dilemma today. If we repeat something and ask him to say the word he won't say it, but he'll mouth it perfectly. If he would put any wind behind the movement the word would be glorious.
Pete is always concerned there might be a hearing issue. Then Cloudy will hear the phone vibrate in my purse and run to retrieve it so we can answer the call, or he'll hear the beep of the Wii sensor bar and insist (with grunts and pushing) that someone go downstairs and turn it off.

I think - maybe - just maybe - he's smarter than the rest of us - and maybe just a little bit lazy.

5 1/2

Ben turned 5 1/2 on February 1st. School was a snow day, so tomorrow his class will celebrate his 1/2 birthday. (Every kid that has a birthday not during the school year the class celebrates the 1/2 birthday).
Since it's just 1/2 a birthday I figured the kids only needed 1/2 the cupcake.

Wonder how many pissed off kindergarteners there will be tomorrow at snack time.
